Fruit and Vegatebles Market / 3erd Prize: “Aguinaga y Asociados Arquitectos”

“Aguinaga y Asociados Arquitectos” Studio has won the third prize of the Market for Fruit and Vegetable Contest in Madrid.

The proposal is not only based in re-utilizing the old market, to house the new Government , Town Planning and Housing Municipal Department, the thing is this proposal is more than this.

The great triangular shaped shelter that covers the central yard ( that will be the main distributor, meeting point , a plce with it owned vitality ) and the great vertical rhombus shaped prism , suggests a great scale, marking the line against the plane.

The tower is a tail that seems to be cutting like a knife, the urban fabric near Legazpi Square. It has 30 levels, a height of 136 meters and 29952 m2 of built area, and only a 21% of this area is occuped by the vertical cores.

The existing structure of concrete of “Ferrero and Peña”, is recovered fussly and can be seen from the external side, through a light coutain wall that protects it like a jewel inside its box.

New Photovoltaic panels from the latest technology allow to solve like a thin translucid film, the capture of the solar energy. This thing, with the rest of tenable technics planned in this building, allows a total saving of perhaps a 60% of the total electrical consumption. So this building is one example of the archicture to preserve the environment.
