Off Corso, Rotterdam / Sustainable Dance Clubbing

Category: Urban planning

A Dutch disco called Off Corso, located in Rotterdam, has become the first electronic music club with a sustainable energy objetive. This old club has introduced in its program, a music session called “The Critical Mass”. This session is the first one that introduces to the usual music offer the the “Sustainable Dance Club” concept. This one was created by the duth arquitect studios “Enviu” ans “Döll”.

This concept is composed of a set “ecologically friendy”, applied to the night and for the “clubbing” world. The idea is to reduce energy wasting related with the night life.

The main idea of this concept, is the energy generation based on the “squeezing material eletricity generation effect”

This physical effect appears when some kind of crystals are squeezed and a mechanical strain is created, these ones create a electrical voltage. So this squeezing creates electricity. In this project this effect is used to create some big platforms that uses the physical movement created by the dancing movement of the room, to create energy

Currently this system is not able to create the needed energy for this club, but it is, to create the energy for the luminous spots and for the low profile lights for the dance floor or big TV.

“The Critical Mass” was inaugarated the last October 14th with a big party where the dancers could enjoy of the night creating with their movement the same energy that they were spending. Some panels were showing the energy creation level ( with different colors ) the amount of energy that was being created at each moment.
