New Athletic de Bilbao Stadium, Spain / Cesar Azkarate
‘Athletic de Bilbao’ football team will have in a few years’ time a brand new stadium, which will be the replacement for the old ‘San Mamés’ stadium, a work from Manuel María Smith.

It will be covered with somewhat translucent panels during the day, yet they will turn silver at night and red-and-white the days there will be a match. It will be able to house up to 56,000 spectators. Work is expected to begin in June 2008.

A novel system will collect the rain water that flows into the stadium. The water collected will later be used for watering the grass. Also, photovoltaic cells will provide energy for the water to be heated and therefore be used in showers.
‘San Mamés Barria, Ltd’ will carry out the project, in which Athletic Football club, Bilbao City Hall, The County Concil and Vizcaya Saving Banks will also take part.

Furthermore, the new Basque Country University Technological Campus will be built on the same location as the stadium.

The cost of the new stadium is estimated at 180 million euro, and it will foreseeably be finished by 2011.
